I sense patterns here, but the rules aren't immediately obvious. (looking...)

Balls tangent to one edge of the spiral are light and those to the other dark? And then when two balls are tangent to one another they're different colors?

This image is the result of applying several complex transformations to a Kleinian Group fractal. Kleinian Group fractals, and the methods used to produce them, are described in the excellent book Indra's Pearls - The Vision of Felix Klein by David Mumford, Caroline Series, and David Wright. They are generated using a set of Mobius transformations. The colors are based on the Mobius transformation used to generate the circle in question.
